Embracing Winter + Nourishment

Tips for the most "Yin" time of the year.

In a world that asks us to produce even when you feel the pull to slow down…

I recently caught the flu—talk about vulnerability. If you missed my last newsletter, you can still read it here:

Today, I feel inspired to share about Winter, which in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is considered the most “Yin” time of the year—inviting inwardness, rest, and restoration.

As I spent this week laid up with body aches, a cough, and a headache, I leaned on these winter wellness basics to heal and stay grounded:

Kam’s Tips for Staying Well This Winter

1. Ginger Tea
A daily must for me: warms the body, supports digestion, and provides antioxidants.

You’ll need:

  • Fresh ginger root

  • Lemon

  • Honey

  • Boiling water

How to make it:

  1. Wash and thinly slice the ginger.

  2. Pour boiling water over it and steep for 5 minutes.

  3. Top with honey and fresh lemon. Enjoy!

2. Daily Sunshine

  • Sunlight can be scarce in winter, so soak it in when possible—morning or late afternoon is ideal.

  • Aim for 10–15 minutes to support your immune system, boost energy, and help regulate your nervous system.

  • Midday sun? Wear sun protection or a hat.

3. Steams, Sauna, Hot Baths, or Hot Yoga

  • Warm baths or showers with steam can soothe a winter cold or cough.

  • Sauna or hot yoga promotes detoxification, muscle relaxation, and skin rejuvenation. (Don’t forget to moisturize afterward.)

4. Healing Soups & Warm Meals

  • Warm, nutrient-rich foods help maintain internal warmth and balance.

  • Quick recipe: sauté celery, carrots, and onion until tender, add garlic, broth, and optional chicken—simple, nourishing, delicious.

5. Slow Down & Do Less

  • Winter is naturally Yin—slower, inward, reflective.

  • Feeling less productive is perfectly aligned with the season.

  • Focus on warmth, nourishment, and richness to create balance.
